Maths

Literacy

Use a potato (or a photograph of one) ask them to look at the potato carefully and describe it.

 

Now look at the front cover of our new story. What is different about that potato (E.g wearing a cape, has a belt with an ‘s’ on it. Do you think it is an ordinary potato?

Tell them the title; ‘Supertato’ Did they guess it was about a superhero, how did they know?

Predict what the story is going to be about. Encourage reasons why.

 

Can they think of any superheroes, what is special about them?

Task: Write down what they know about superheros. E.g brave, strong, can fly etc.

Some children may be able to write words down, help with initial sounds and an adult writes the rest.

Speech and Language

Explore the picture above, discuss it and answer these questions.

Name some things you can see. Show me something that is not red.

What is happening here?

Why/how is the carpet floating?

How is the boy feeling? Was he expecting this to happen?

How is the dog feeling? How do you know?

Does this bedroom belong to the boy? What does the setting tell you about his character?

Use a speech bubbles diagram at the start of this topic to find out what the children already know about celebrating. Add information from previous topics, e.g. Birthdays, Christmas, New Year and any other celebrations that take place in school or at home that the children will be aware of. Do you have any photographs you can share together?

 

-Look at the pictures on the webpage. What is happening? Do you recognise any of the celebrations?

-Sing some party songs

 

Task:

On a balloon shape, (or similar) invite the children to draw different elements of a celebration.  Challenge them to remember all the different things that make a good celebration.
