Literacy
Show children a selection of images of vegetables- play ‘Guess the vegetable’
game. Take it in turns to describe a vegetables to each other - can you guess which
vegetable they are describing? Highlight the importance of looking carefully at the vegetables and being specific with descriptions- e.g. both broccoli and peas are green. How can we make our descriptions clearer? E.g. small, round and green. (Adult or child) Create a word bank of the descriptive language children have used- as appropriate highlight that these words are called adjectives.
Share from the page when ‘Supertato’ appears through to Supertato being surrounded the
other vegetables. What do we find out about ‘Supertato’ from this section of the story?
Encourage children to make inferences as well as to directly retrieve information from the
story- e.g. the story tells us that he has ‘super speed’ and ‘super strength’, but we also know
that ‘Supertato’ is brave, heroic etc.
Task: Write description words for Supertato. Use a table similar to the one in the image below. Highlight that some words describe his appearance and some describe his personality.
